Brands don't live where they used to

There was a time when a brand could exist almost entirely in static formats.

A logo, a colour palette, some printed stationery, maybe a brochure or a billboard. Brand guidelines were designed to keep those things consistent, and for years they did exactly that.

But brands don't live there anymore.

Today, most people experience a brand through a screen. They see social content before they visit a website. They watch videos before they read brochures. They interact with apps, digital campaigns, presentations and animated content long before they ever see a printed document.

The way brands are experienced has changed

The environments have changed, but many brand systems haven't.

We're still creating identities that are largely built around static assets, then asking designers, marketers and content creators to adapt them for an increasingly dynamic world. That's often where consistency starts to break down. Every animation behaves differently. Every campaign develops its own personality. Every team interprets the brand in their own way.

It's rarely because people aren't following the guidelines. It's because the guidelines were never designed for the way brands are experienced today.

A brand is identity is about more than appearance

A modern brand needs more than rules about logo placement and colour values. It needs principles that define how it behaves. How it moves. How it transitions between touchpoints. How it communicates consistently across websites, social media, presentations, campaigns and every other place people encounter it.

This isn't about making everything animated. Motion is only one part of a much bigger picture.

It's about recognising that brands no longer exist as a collection of static assets. They exist as living systems, experienced across dozens of different channels, often in the space of a single day.

The brands that feel the most consistent aren't necessarily the ones with the best logos. They're the ones that behave consistently wherever you meet them.

From static brands to living brand systems

That's why we believe the era of the static-first brand is coming to an end.

The future belongs to living brand systems. Systems that don't just define how a brand looks, but how it behaves. Systems that give internal teams, agencies and creators the tools they need to communicate consistently, regardless of the platform or format.

Because in a screen-first world, consistency isn't achieved by creating more rules.

It's achieved by creating better systems.
